2005 Battlefords North Stars “Growing with the Stars” Ag Project
The 2005 Agricultural (“Ag”) Project is once again in the ground and growing. First on the agenda was the signing of the lease again with Red Pheasant First Nation. Then, the next step, was deciding on the crop of our choice. This year, we decided to choose wheat.
The 335 acres of wheat was sprayed with a pre-seed burn off by Double D Custom Spraying. The chemical used was Round-Up weather max mixed wuth some express on the south ½ of the field and Glyfos from Cavalier Agro on the north ½ of the field.
We decided to seed our wheat crop on May 15 th, 2005. We had a great day due to all of the support from our sponsors.
Norsask Farm Equipment brought out a STX450 4WD Case tractor that pulled a Flexi-coil drill equipped with a mid-row banding unit and a tow behind anhydrous tank, which was supplied by Agricore United. Also, Garry Nachtegaele supplied his seeding outfit to help out that day.
Four seed growers from within the area supplied the wheat. Charabin Seed Farm, and Buziak Seed Farm donated some AC Harvest, which is seeded on the north half of the field. Next to the crop indicated above, we have some AC Bounty from Illingworth Seed Farm. In addition, we finished off with some AC Elsa, courtesy of Gregoire Seed Farm.
The fertilizer was donated by Agricore United, Pioneer Grain Hamlin, Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, Cargill Ag Horizon, and Mid-Sask Ag. As well, Mid-Sask Ag also supplied a fertilizer spreader to spread fertilizer in front of Garry Nachtegaele’s seeding unit. Greenstar Ag & Turf donated a John Deere tractor to pull the fertilizer spreader. J. J. Lamon , along with the Battlefords & District Co-op, donated the fuel for the spring seeding.
The crop got off to a great start with abundant moisture. When it came to spraying time, once again, Double D Custom Spraying, provided us with the spraying duties. The whole crop was sprayed with a wild oat herbicide horizon, courtesy of Sygenta Crop Science. With the horizon, there were four different kinds of tank mixes. The first 80 acres, starting on the north end, was mixed with Buctil M from Bayer Crop Science. The next 80 acres, was mixed with Mextrol 400, courtesy of Nufarm Crop Protection. In addition, the following 80 acres was mixed with Frontline from Dow Agro Science, while the last 80 acres was mixed with Dyvel from Dupont.
The 2005 crop has been seeded and sprayed. Right now, we are waiting for our harvest day. We expect harvest day will be in the beginning of September. Be sure to watch for the swathers and combines in September. Anyone is welcome to stop by the crop if you see us out there.
Later on, I will have a harvest report, when our harvest day is complete. I would once again like to thank all of our sponsors who have made this Ag Project a great success and fundraiser for our Junior Hockey Club.
See you in the fall!
Thank you,
Keith Nachtegaele
